Data Privacy Day (DPD) is observed annually on January 28th and is led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA).  It is an effort to empower and educate everyone to control their digital footprint and protect their privacy.

This year the overall theme is “Respecting privacy, safeguarding data, and enabling trust”.  The theme highlights three important concepts for data privacy.  First, everyone must learn how to respect privacy.  What may be okay to disclose for one person may be considered an invasion of privacy to another person.  Second, keeping data safe is the responsibility of everyone.  The recent data breaches against well known retailers shows there is still a lot of work to be done in making sure data is kept safe at all times, whether at rest, in motion, or in use.  And third, both respecting privacy and safeguarding data enables trust.  Consumers trust their information is going to be kept safe so what happens to that trust when a breach is announced?

EDUCAUSE extends DPD to Data Privacy Month (DPM) which is January 28th to February 28th.  This blog will have posts all month long to celebrate DPD and DPM so spread the word and start thinking about what data privacy means to you.  Remember that every day should be a data privacy day so make protecting your privacy a priority all year long.
