Mekong Delta Overnight Trip

The several days spent in Saigon certainly came with many learning experiences. After having difficulty navigating the city, struggling with communication and even getting trapped in an elevator, I was ready to visit the less hectic Mekong Delta. The 24 hour-ish trip would go on to blow away my expectations, and was easily one of the best parts of the trip so far.

When we first arrived, we boarded a boat and headed to the homestay, located on an island. Though the living conditions were less than luxurious, we were in an unbelievable location and I was ready to experience all the delta had to offer. After a group lunch and a reflection period, we boarded small canoes and paddled through the rivers that sprawled the land. Then, we visited a few local establishments such as a brick factory, a fruit farm and a small trinket shop. It was interesting to see how people make use of their surroundings to earn a living.

At the end of the day, there was a group dinner followed by a traditional musical performance (and even some singing by my peers). What made this day trip even more interesting was the style of the living situation. Unlike the hotels we have been staying at, we were welcomed into someone’s home. Our hosts were incredibly receptive and were genuinely happy to have us. This was my first experience with staying in such a place, but I warmed up to it very quickly.

All in all, the Mekong trip opened my eyes to many more things. I learned what it’s like to live on a farm and be woken up at sunrise by the sound of roosters crowing. I leaned that the people living in the area are truly kind a warm-hearted, while also being very hardworking. One final aspect of the experience was that the group became very close as a result of the the trip, with no tv or anywhere to go, which was certainly refreshing.
