“For nearly two weeks, many here on the Duke University campus had been aware of a certain senior ‘thesis’ that a recent graduate wrote, apparently as a private joke, about her sexual exploits with 13 student-athletes. Then the Internet seized on it. The thesis, written as a 42-page Power Point presentation, went viral.” Read more of this New York Times article by Katharine Q. Privacy invasion led to death?

Posted on: October 1, 2010 | By: Kelly Reimer | Filed under: Tech Tips

Tyler Clementi, an 18 year old Rutgers University student, committed suicide after his sexual encounter with another man was streamed online. Tyler’s roommate videotaped him secretly with a web cam and then posted two Tweets, one of which stated “Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it’s happening again.” On September 22 a mobile status update on Tyler’s Facebook page stated, “jumping off the gw bridge sorry.” This misuse of technology has led to tragic results. As a member of the Elon University community, we must each ask ourselves, “Am I using technology in ethical and responsible ways? Am I using technology in ways that go against Elon University’s dedication to the intellectual, personal, and spiritual growth of all of its members? Am I aware that my individual actions have an effect on the larger community?” In the spring…

Biology Cabinet video resources support engaged learning

Posted on: September 3, 2010 | By: Kelly Reimer | Filed under: Tech Tips

“Laboratory classes are and have always been the primary experiences associated with engaged learning in the sciences. These “Biology Cabinet” video resources that we’ve created enable our students to prepare for such experiences by reviewing relevant concepts and by seeing demonstrations of precisely the equipment, procedures and techniques they’ll be using in their lab work here at Elon.”  – Dr. Antonio Izzo In support of the emphasis on “engaged learning” in Elon’s undergraduate curriculum, and particularly in the Biology Department, Dr. Antonio Izzo, Dr. Yuko Miyamoto, Dr. Herb House, and Dr. Robert Vick have created, and are continuing work on, video demonstration resources for a “Biology Lab Cabinet” website. EdTech, a magazine focused on technology applications in education, features Elon University in its September/October edition. The article, titled “Building the Smarter Classroom,” says that Elon is “taking instructional technology to the next level,” with “pioneering collaborative classrooms and teaching students real-world skills.” EdTech notes that about 200 of Elon’s classrooms are equipped with technology beyond wired and wireless network access. Joe Davis, Elon’s assistant director of campus technology support for classrooms, told the magazine that, “over the past decade, we’ve systematically added technology in traditional classrooms until it’s become ubiquitous and standardized.” Also quoted in the article are Christopher Waters, assistant CIO and director of teaching and learning technologies; Peter Felten, assistant provost and director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning; and Rebecca Pope-Ruark, assistant professor of English. In a sidebar story, senior Nick Friederich discussed an advanced document camera that was used to present…

VirtualApps launched

Posted on: August 20, 2010 | By: Scott Hildebrand | Filed under: Tech Tips

Faculty, students and staff now have 24/7, on-demand access to a library of popular software from any computer, anywhere in the world with an Internet connection through VirtualApps. Currently, people must visit a particular computer lab during normal hours of operation to use some specific software. While anyone will still be able to visit labs for specific software, VirtualApps allows people with an Elon username to log in to a web-based system to access specialized software. This access gives Elon students, faculty and staff the flexibility of using the software on campus, at home and even while studying abroad. Our initial efforts in virtualized software includes SPSS, Mathematica, Atlas TI and Adobe Design Suite Premium, which includes InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat Pro, Flash, Dreamweaver, and Fireworks. VirtualApps is not platform specific and can be used by both Windows and Mac operating systems. You can access VirtualApps at www.elon.edu/virtualapps and learn…

Elon partners with Google to provide student e-mail accounts

Posted on: May 7, 2010 | By: Scott Hildebrand | Filed under: Tech Tips

On June 1, students will receive expanded e-mail capability when Elon converts all student e-mail to Google’s web-based e-mail service, Gmail. Students will not have to do anything. E-mail addresses (student@elon.edu) and passwords will remain the same. Inbox contents, including calendar appointments and contacts, will automatically be transferred to the new Gmail accounts. Storage capacity will be increased to more than 7 GB (and counting). Students who check e-mail on a mobile device or use an e-mail client can learn how to update their settings by visiting theTechnology Wiki. Google’s e-mail service is secure and provides students with access to Google Applications, a package of online applications that makes communicating and collaborating at school easier and more efficient. Google Apps includes opportunities to share documents, chat online, sync calendars and create websites. All of these services are hosted online, so e-mail, documents and calendars are accessible from any computer. Elon’s…
