NPBA Foundation Fitzwater Memorial Scholarship for Second Year Law Students

NORFOLK & PORTSMOUTH BAR ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION
2017 FITZWATER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Dear Second Year Law Student:

The Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association Foundation is pleased to announce availability of the Elizabeth B. Fitzwater Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $2,500.00 to be awarded in May 2017 to a deserving second year law student who demonstrates a strong interest in practicing law in the public service/public interest sector in South Hampton Roads and who meets the criteria established by the Selection Committee.

The Foundation’s mission is to promote the administration of justice, to educate the public about the importance of law in their daily lives, and to enhance the image of the legal profession in our community. We welcome the opportunity to serve our community by assisting financially those law students who intend to practice in the South Hampton Roads area, becoming leaders in the public service sector of the legal profession and outstanding citizens, following the example set by the late Ms. Fitzwater.

Elizabeth Fitzwater grew up in Portsmouth and earned her undergraduate degree from James Madison University, her MBA from Old Dominion University, and her JD from George Mason School of Law. She died in 2011 at the age of 43 as the result of a car accident. In 1998, Ms. Fitzwater became an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Portsmouth, and in 2007 she joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, in Norfolk, as a Special Assistant United States Attorney, where she continued to practice until her untimely death. In her role as prosecutor, Ms. Fitzwater successfully prosecuted defendants charged with committing violent crimes, drug and firearm offenses, and murder for hire. She was admired by all who knew her and, in the words of her classmates, Elizabeth Fitzwater “was the rare person who inspires you to be a better version of yourself – a better lawyer, a better parent, a better person. We were all blessed to have known her.”

We hope you will review the enclosed materials and choose to participate. Applicants should return a completed application (with attached documents – see instructions on the enclosed application) no later than 5 pm on March 27, 2017.  It is very important that applications be complete when submitted, including a telephone number and/or e-mail address where you may be contacted. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please read the application carefully and follow all instructions. If you have any questions regarding the Fitzwater scholarship program, please feel free to contact the Scholarship Chair, Beryl Adler, at 757-490-6267 or e-mail him at badler@pendercoward.com

Sincerely,

Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association Foundation
