NCBA Young Lawyers Division Wills for Heroes

The NCBA YLD will be holding a Wills for Heroes event in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, April 2, from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (the last appointment will be scheduled at 4:00 pm) at the Charlotte Fire Department Headquarters, located at 500 Dalton Avenue, Charlotte, North Carolina 28206.

No prior estate planning background is required to serve as an attorney or non-attorney volunteer, but typing and computer skills are helpful in order to draft the documents.

We need as much help as possible! Licensed NC attorneys are needed to draft the Wills, Durable Powers of Attorney and Health Care Powers of Attorney.  Paralegals, notaries and law student witnesses are also needed.  Notaries are especially in high demand.

Please consider volunteering all day, but we appreciate any time that you can volunteer.  If you can only volunteer for part of the day, please indicate if you would like to volunteer for the morning session (9:00 am -1:45 pm) or the afternoon session (12:30 pm – 5:00 pm).

We will provide training sessions prior to the first appointment times. During the training sessions, we will provide basic training on NC law regarding Wills, Durable Powers of Attorney and Health Care Powers of Attorney, we will show you how the HotDocs software works, and you will have the opportunity to practice with the software. First responders are provided with a questionnaire to fill out beforehand, and it corresponds with the fill-in the blank HotDocs software used to draft the estate planning documents.

If you are a licensed attorney practicing in the area of wills & estates, please let us know if you would be willing to help with the training.  In addition, if you have experience in the area of wills & estates, please let us know if you are willing to serve as a floater during the actual event to answer any questions that the other attorneys may have.

Prior to the event date it will also be helpful to review the following “This is the Law Pamphlets” available on the NCBA website.

(1)      Living Wills and Healthcare Powers of Attorney ; and

(2)      Protecting Your Assets: Wills, Trusts, and Powers of Attorney.

If you or someone you know (including non-attorney staff members at your work or friends) would like to volunteer for this event, please click here for more information and to register as a volunteer:

If you have any additional questions, please contact Anastasia Cowan at or Rachel Rogers.

Elon Law’s “Ask a Lawyer Day” has been scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. here at the law school. This annual event provides Elon Law students with a fantastic opportunity to participate in pro bono work.  On April 23, members of the Greensboro community are invited to speak with a volunteer lawyer at no charge about legal questions they may have. Students will have the invaluable opportunity to observe the attorney-client interaction and learn about the subject matter of the consultations.  The practice areas in which we receive the most requests for assistance include family law, employment, public benefits, general property issues, wills/estates, bankruptcy, foreclosure, mortgage, tax, criminal and personal injury. Student volunteer shifts are available from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., 12 p.m. – 2 p.m., or the entire day from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
