I Hate ITC Garamond

Warning: this post may or may not be all over the place. I am a little distracted in writing this, but I have discovered a couple gems nonetheless. And so, I’ll highlight those below.

“You may have to design a lot of good things on the off chance that a few of them might turn out to be great.” This isn’t the first time we’ve heard advice like this this semester. In fact, Sang even mentioned that we will not be good at first so look at other work as inspiration until you get there.

I love the idea of becoming really good at something as a fallback. Fallback is, afterall, your style. Like Ruth, for example. She’s really good at visual collages. Only three months later and we all identify her work easily and share similar pieces to her often. I think if I could identify a fall back style of my own, it would be gray scale with a hint of a color.

I enjoyed Bierut’s essay on ITC Garamond. He claims that Garamond is so awful perhaps because a man named Tony created it in a time when typeface designers were still named ‘Tony.’ I love his writing.

Bierut’s mom said, “it’s nice to be important, it’s important to be nice.” I think I’ll end on that note because nothing more needs to be said on the topic.
