The Inspirational Harry Marks

As Harry Marks has proved, the art of typography is applied everywhere as a static image or motion graphics.

It was interesting to see Marks transition from paper to video. He uniquely used the effect of lighting to play with motion. The light source creates a sense of 3D motion. Marks worked with a camera and a light. Now, design programs have built-in effect capabilities to create the artificial scene.

Marks is a great example of a visionary who thinks outside of the box. He was more inclined to run experiments of his ideas rather than producing the cookie cutter media dominantly practiced. He took the idea of a wire-frame (commonly used to build structures) and applied them to a digital 2D space.

I have noticed that design work is often under appreciated for the time and talent put into the idea/development process. Motion graphics are everywhere on TV – in TV show intros, movie intros/trailers, commercials, promotions, etc. Prior to beginning Elon’s iMedia program, I have never given the production process much thought. After watching Harry Marks talk about the concept starting from the beginning, an idea, I have a much greater appreciation for the time and vision put into it and I am not the only one. In the documentary he talks about the battle for his Emmy award. He almost didn’t receive the recognition because his motion graphics were produced digitally and not man made with actual wire frames.

I enjoyed the documentary, Harry Marks is inspirational.
