Hook, Line and Sinker

Like Alexandra, I watched way too many of these. However, I really liked ‘Best Friends’ with Katie Kirk and Nathan Strandberg. I know, I know…this is really girly of me. But I truly LIKED the design and aesthetics of their response. Especially now that we are discussing kinetics, I find their short endearing, clear, and to the point. They highlight the design that inspires them, then go on to discuss elements of design present in a technology they (and most of us) use every day…the iPhone! Not only did they talk about its sleek appearance, but observed the beauty in its navigation, interface and functions.

Besides the cute couple, I also loved Luis Fitch and ‘Mix it Up.’ It’s visually stimulating from the moment you hit the play button. HE’S WEARING A LUCHADOR MASK! And they’re all over the place! And he loves the molcajete! He even spells it for me! Anyway, like the first couple it is interesting to see what drives Luis and how he conceptualized design and integrates it into aspects of his daily life.

So…these two videos more than the rest helped me to get a genuine feel for what inspires the individuals and why design is important to them. This realization brought me to two conclusions:

#1: A good design aesthetic has the innate power to make people listen. It grabs the attention of the viewer, like the hook in a paper. It also allows for one to insert elements of personal taste and vision which brings me to my next point…

#2: Design truly advances the narrative. By spending less than five minutes watching these artists I was able to gain a better understanding of them, how they think, what they love, their personal taste and their inspirations. Thus, design can tell a story no matter what type of narrative we aim to tell we can only further it through the visual aesthetic.

So I will leave you with this…take it in and eat some pizza–a story in less than a minute. David’s Pizza Ad
