Not close to where I want to be

I really want to get better at design. Although I learned some tools and skills at Appalachian State, my concept of what makes a “good design” certainly has fallen short. I can get by on the interfaces and I know what good design looks like, but connecting the two ideas together in my head and producing something I’m happy with has been something I’ve struggled with.

Unfortunately, the thing I’m best at designing is newspaper layouts. This would be great if the Internet wasn’t murdering print editions of newspapers. And even on top of that, if I got paid every time my Media Productions professor told me I needed more whitespace in my layout, I wouldn’t of had to rely on the government this year to help pay for grad school.

But I’m determined. Creating something visually artistic that I’m truly happy with has been something that has eluded me. Sure I’ll like aspects of it, but I don’t think I’ve ever made something and gone “Wow, this is really awesome!” I hope to achieve that in this class.

I expect to struggle some in this class, but I also expect to love it. It’s going to challenge me in the best way, and hopefully help me achieve some of my goals that I have in this program. I expect to learn a lot, and finally figure out how to create things that I like. But most of all, I expect to have fun with this class. Based off of my first impressions, this class seems to allow for a decent amount of creative freedom. We can push the envelope, at least on the first assignment. And I’m really excited for that.
