New Media? Meet Alan, Old Media.

The favorite part for me about posting the blog posts are indeed not what I write, but the posts of my classmates. It always amazes me, and this class is no exception, to learn of all the different backgrounds and experience we all bring to the table. I love hearing what the work backgrounds are that brought us to this program. And I can honestly say that when it comes to this class, I have absolutely zero prior knowledge.

In all of our classes thus far we keep hearing the phrase, old media. We keep hearing that the old way of doing things is changing and that if “they” don’t learn the new way and new tools, “they” will never keep up. Well, I am here to represent that old way. I do want to learn these new ways and new tools. When I was working in television, every time I had a story I shot or produced that needed graphics or design, there were people that did that for us and made them look wonderful. You would shoot the story, edit what you could, and if graphics were needed, you would submit a request and someone on the graphics department would do their magic in that room in the back of the station that always seemed way cooler than the others. They would then, very quickly, bring you the work and you would edit it in. Happened all the time. Even in the freelance world, the way to get around it was to befriend just one person who could do all this stuff and trade off videos with them. Worked beautifully. We also heard Motley himself say that the best managers are the ones that understand how the entire process works.

Well, I am here to learn that process. I just hope my classmates don’t mind if I bug them for help. Again and again.
