Data Visualization: Here to Stay

The more skills or knowledge you have under your belt the more marketable you are in the real world.  After watching the short film ‘Journalism In the Age of Data’ confirmed that idea.  As a visual designer it is important that you can be tell a story with what you create. At the same time your design should be visually appealing and easy to understand.

In most cases in the real world, in order to create a infographic, it would take two individuals to get the job done.  One person would produce and collect the data and then another person to take the data and express it in a way that is visual appealing.  As an interactive media producer with a specific skill can make a two men project come from one person. Having a subject expertise and then utilizing an interactive media background to tell that story is an unmatched skillset to posses.  J Paige West of MSNBC.com even mentioned it in the film that more press companies are looking to hire people who can both collect the data and design it.

Being able to make complex information into content that is easy to understand and visually engaging is becoming more and more popular.  Data visualization is something that will only grow as the digital world continues to expand. While working on my first infographic this film made me really think about my content and how I want to format it on my canvas.  It also gave me other ways to express content in a way to make it more interactive.  Websites, such as Google graphs, are great tools that will see myself using in the future in creating visual graphs.
