Essays

It’s always interesting to read descriptions and stories of other trades. Design is such a big world and so many people are involved, directly or indirectly. It’s as if we inadvertently stumble onto a liking of all things creative and catchy. I think my favorite was “31” where he spoke about the traffic buttons not working. It’s so funny because that’s how I visualize everything, with appeasement. This may be off on a tangent, alas, a friend of mine in undergrad used to say “everybody wants to be happy, it’s ok if the happy is a miserable lie, as long as the happy makes them happy.”

Design is the same way, it creates a facade. It makes us happy. When we go to wells fargo, we’re taking money out of the bank but it’s something about the trusty horse in the bold red and yellow that embodies that of safety that insinuates the stance that our money is safe. Or the warm neutral colors of the Harris Teeter logo that suggest family-friendly and healthy, although the groceries are pricey.

Same with the elevator button, the cross-walk buttons and maybe even other buttons. The fact that they’re there, gives us comfort and we can continue about our daily lives. It may not stop our actions but it definitely uninhibited the inhibition, so we go forward with our regularly scheduled routine.

The essay about the lady hating ITC Garmound was quite funny. It’s so funny how designers treat certain aspects of the craft like a high school nemesis…”we don’t speak of her.” I guess if you love it, you live it…which in turn I think separates the good from the great. Your work never leaves you especially if it’s a passion.

Overall the essays were interesting and once again solidified more interesting facts, colloquials, anecdotals and etc in regard to design.
