iPhone interface

Edward Tufte… hm… after listening to his voice, it wouldn’t be my first choice. I’m sorry, but am I the only one who found him dull and uninspiring? Can I do a critique of this video clip selection? It’s a little outdated, with Tufte looking at the very first iPhone, which has evolved 4+times over.

One point that I actually liked about this clip and that still remains true with the iPhone came at the end of the movie. If the information is in chaos, don’t start throwing out information, just fix the design. The weather app is a great example of this. So much more could have been done with it, as Tufte explains, but it has the potential to be information overload. “Clutter and overload are not an attributes of information, they are failures of design.” I most certainly can relate and learn from this statement. I have always struggled with including too much information in my designs, it is evident throughout projects I have done for this class as well as my other classes here this semester as well as classes and projects I have done in undergrad. Simplicity is key and Apple has managed to do that so well for so long. This notion even makes me think of Apple’s commercials for their projects versus their competitors, such as the new Kindle fire app. The only redeeming quality about the fire is that it is much cheaper than the iPad. Their new commercial does not make me want to go onto Amazon to buy it. Apple ads though always make me want to purchase their products, they show the simplest things with minimal dialogue.
