Maybe We Shouldn’t Skip the Titles

Whenever I watch a movie on DVD rather than in the movie theater, I skip the titles. I usually go right to the beginning of the movie. I never really appreciated the title sequences. Titles sequences are important because they introduce the movie or show.  They need to fit with the overall theme of the movie while aesthetically presenting the people involved in the creation of the movie.

I found that even just the font of the credits is an artistic method of presenting the movie. The scratchy, handwritten front for the movie “Se7en” portrays the serial killer in a creepy, OCD way before the movie even starts. The titles set the mood for the movie and that is why it is crucial the titles fit with the film.

I really liked the title sequence for the show “True Blood.” This show became very popular a few years ago and won many awards. The title provides the dark, scary feeling that is the mood throughout the show. The distorted coloring of the video also gives the evil feel that is associated with Vampires and the “undead.” In the beginning of the sequence, no people are shown. By only showing images of homes, and landscapes portrays a deserted town. The first image of a human is a group of women in church praying. This is powerful because Vampires are often associated with the Devil and with Hell. The church women show a direct contrast of that and of how humans deal with fears of the unknown.

The ending of this sequence is brilliant. Red hues that are used throughout the sequence are brought to a close in the ending title scene. The image looks like red blood cells underneath a microscope. Blood has to be associated in this sequence somewhere because blood is always associated with Vampires. The font of the title starts out bold and then end of getting thinner and thinner. I thought this was a perfect choice because it makes me think of the slow, gradual loss of life when a Vampire sucks the blood out of a human. These examples show that every little thing is important in design and nothing should be ignored. These sequences have inspired me when I go to design my own motion graphic.
