Pica- acheeww!

What the hell. When I first watched these short animations I felt perplexed, but wildly amused. They are brilliant on the 3rd take! I think you just have to overcome all the distractions: the cutsie but rusted out, robotic characters, the SAW setting inside the tower of terror at disney world, the desolate land, and the wholesome music playing in the background.

It’s dangerously clever, and a unique portrayal of a dark story. As we discussed in class its uncanny how well visual innuendos and audio cues can tell the story to the audience without spelling it out. The death of the two “gaurds” perhaps, the blind man falling down the stairs, the buzzing/blinking light going on and off in the corridor, the soulful country song playing in pizza delivery drunk in the middle of a nowhere/ dark/ insecure setting. All of these cues were essential tools in setting the mood, and telling the narrative. However, not one lost site of the plot.

I have to admit. Every single time I watch the last Pica…and the small delivery boy gets out of the car to deliver the pizza… he waddles in cartoon fashion up to the building just before getting shot…which blows him backward to the ground… I LAUGH WITHOUT FAIL. haha I know, I know. It’s not like the acme cartoons where the characters keep on trucking… but something about it. Perhaps I’m as sick and twisted as the spineless killer in the pica animations, or as the creator who constructs innocent little techy cartoons and puts them in front of a firing squad. Every time! I’m laughing now… Agh.

Who is that “not so bright” fella at the end by the way? Not the killer…. could he really pull it off?
