Hillman Curtis: Short Films

There are a lot of great filming techniques that Hillman Curtis uses in his short films that I like. I think every film had great music selection. Every song fit in perfectly with its film. The songs did not distract from the video but add a sense of emotion to them. Also each character worked for the film that he was shooting. I was glad to see some variety of character choices in the films.

Another great technique that he used that I liked was in some of the films he had the color black & white then it would fade to color. It added a different type of element to the scenes. Each time he used the technique in the films Powerhouse Books – the musical and American Spirit, it made sense. Furthermore Hillman used cropping very well in his films. In the opening scene of the film Roof the camera is tight on main actor and you can really get that sense of panic, sacredness, and uncertainty on the actors face, and without that shot the film would not of been as good.

Hillman choices of quick cut scenes in the Circle film are very interesting. The scene switches camera angles a lot but it keeps the viewer engaged. Overall I think the film with the best story line or plot was Blow Up. The storyline was carried from beginning to end and really had intrigued. I love the way it ended with the expressions on the actor and actress face. I think this film was the best written, directed and acted.
