Even art has laws.
When it comes down to it, everything has a technique; rules and regulations that make it work successfully.
That’s not to discredit those brave souls in the past who have broken the rules that resulted in grand discoveries. These were innovators who turned their backs on the status quo and recreated the norm.
But, even so, new rules are always established. It’s a cycle. Breaking rules results in the making of new ones. Art is always evolving. However, I learned that some rules, no matter who comes blazing through, will always remain the same.
The Gestalt Principles of Perception is a very handy tool to have. I bookmarked it because I know I will need it again. And again.
Who knew there were so many rules in graphic design work?
I’ve heard a lot of people belittle professions in the Arts– “Oh, you’re a Comm major? So you don’t have any real work?” or “You’re an actor? Do you even need to go to school for that?”
If you’ve ever said that to someone, reevaluate your life. Graphic design, as seen in this reading, has a plethora of rules and correlations that make things work.
So, you may be right. This isn’t like Calculus at all. Nor is it like Organic Chemistry. But, at the end of the day, we have rules – combinations that work, and combinations that don’t.
Next time you’re balancing your chemical equation, or perhaps dabbling in some continuous functions, just remember, we have more fun.
