In my family I’m probably the tech-expert of the group. I’m no mathematical genius but understand the basics of the Internet and how to work with multiple electronics. So when I was reading “20 Things I Learned About Browsers And The Web,” I automatically assumed that it would be pretty simple and full of facts I already knew. Yes, there definitely were some terms I’ve heard of before like cookies, JavaScript and plug-ins. But have never fully understood how each one helps my viewing pleasure and navigate around the world-wide-web. So indeed some of the reading was review, but still I found myself finding out things about this ground-breaking invention that now millions of people use on a daily basis.
For example, Cloud Computing: even when your computer has a complete breakdown, your data and files could still be reachable because of them being safely stowed away in the Internet. Or IP Addresses (giving the location of where a device is on the Internet) and DNS/ Domain Name System (“phone book” the web that will take you where you need to go). Learning some of these little facts about the web fascinates me because from my point of view, the internet is a useful tool. I don’t see all the little cogs, machines, applications and such that make it what it is. I may not be a complete brilliant mathematician that can solve out of any issue ( I still bring my Mac to the Genius Bar from time to time). But now I understand on how it works better and can appreciate it more.
The reading itself was quite good. The descriptions, comparisons and even little cartoon visuals provided in the text helped me understand the “20 things” about the Internet better. I’m a visual learner, so having a descriptive definition/ paragraph along with some images (whether it be goofy or precise) can help me see the bigger picture. It’s definitely a good read to understand the basics of the Internet and would recommend it to those interested.
But there definitely is one thing that crossed my mind while reading this: My dad has said that the Internet is the best AND worst invention in the world. And I completely believe it. Yes, it is fast, evolved and a popular to connect with others, shop or share you ideas to the world. But at the same time, whatever you put up there can stay for the whole world to see forever whether you like it or not. It’s also easy for people to take away your personal information and details/ use your profile if you’re not careful (malware and phishing attacks). The Internet browsers do have privacy settings that allow you not to share everything with the world, but still you need to be cautious.
As mentioned, some of this was review but still I learned something new about the Internet that I hadn’t before. I guess this just proves that you can never fully master something or that you can always surprise yourself with what you don’t know. The world is evolving and growing, including the web. I’m pretty sure that there’s will be more things that I will learn in the next few years that didn’t exist before now. Now THAT’S something to look forward too.
