A Million Things I Learned About Anything to do with the Web

I do not know anything about the Internet (or technology in general).  It took me quite some time to get through this reading because I am literally starting from square 1.  Every sentence, every small piece of information was new to me.  I’m glad I started learning with this reading because it was super easy to follow and understand.

The top 5 things I learned that I think will effect my everyday computer use:

1.  Browsers: When I log into my computer (or any computer at that), I just click on the first browser I see.  It never occurred to me that some browsers are better than others for certain online tasks.  I also typically ignore any pop-ups that ask if I want to update anything on my computer – now I know I should!

2.  The Internet:  It “started” in 1974?!?  Shows what I know – I thought it all began in the 1990s.

3.  HTML, JavaScript, CSS:  Every time I had previously heard of or read any of those terms I would completely ignore it, thinking I could never understand what it meant so it’s not worth trying.  Well now I do!  And this reading made it super easy to understand.

4.  Cookies: OOOH, that’s what it means.  It’s something that pops up on your computer all the time and people like me get frustrated.  It’s just a memory of visits – why did I ever think it was way more complicated.

4: Browser Extensions (my favorite):  After reading this section, I looked through tons of extensions Chrome offers.  So fun!  I got an extension for weather, a thesaurus, Netflix, etc.  I feel so tech-trendy.

If most readings are aimed at newbies like me such as this one, I think I will be great in this class!
