I think Jeffrey Zeldman’s article, “Understanding Web Design” is a very unique perspective into the flaws of today’s web producers. To Zeldman, the biggest problem with today’s web designers and producers is that they have little to no experience or expertise in either web design, or, even more troublesome, the internet itself. Yet, they’re the ones who are in charge of “creating websites or supervising web designers and developers,” while also being “professionally charged with evaluating it on behalf of the rest of us. There are, in Zeldman’s estimation, too many editors and designers who are worrying too much about including advertisements and business on their sites while at the same time ignoring art and other forms of news.
I had never thought to deeply about how a website was designed, or how much content it had on one subject as opposed to any other. I also didn’t think to consider who it was providing me with my information, and how trustworthy they were. However, After reading Zeldman’s article, I’m now more likely to judge a website on how it presents its information and on what subjects it covers. We need the smartest, most technologically sound people to start designing our websites. That way, we can be assured that our websites are providing its readers with the most reliable information rather than being caught up in which site is the nicest to look at.
