The Assistant Director for Civic Engagement is a full-time, 12-month Student Life professional within the Davidson College Center for Civic Engagement. The Assistant Director provides oversight for programs such as Federal Community Service Work-study program and the summer Education Scholars program. This person also plays a central role in coordinating programs and events in the center, including the Bonner Scholars Program. Furthermore, the Assistant Director serves as the primary point person for within the center for updating WildcatSync (OrgSync platform) and works with the Center for Civic Engagement team to advise service related student organizations and sustain related partnerships with nonprofit partners.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Bonner Scholars Program Support
- Work closely with the Director of Civic Engagement & Bonner Scholars to design, facilitate and assess the educational model and curriculum for the Bonner Program including weekly meetings
- Provide ongoing mentoring and advising to Bonner Scholars, specifically in the second and third year classes
- Plan and lead periodic service trips and retreats involving travel to other locations.
- Monitor students’ completion of hours and other program requirements and address any challenges with individual students
- Market and promote the Bonner Program internally and externally via social media and print. Develop outreach and program materials to communicate with potential Bonner Scholars
- Student Leader Advising/ Leadership Development
- In conjunction with other staff in the Center, advise service-based student organizations within the Civic Engagement Council (CEC) and sustain relationships with related nonprofit organizations
- Develop and deliver service leadership curriculum (e.g., event planning, fundraising, volunteer management and transition)
- Provide counsel and support to students seeking civic engagement opportunities
- Program & Event Coordination
- Direct the Summer Education Scholars Program including the recruitment, hiring and training of Scholars; outreach to key community partners to host Scholars; design of weekly curriculum and enrichment activities and all logistical program details
- Oversee the Federal Community Service Work-Study (FCSWS) program with approximately 25 students. Organize FCSWS orientation and placements with community partners and supervise students. Conduct periodic site visits. Verify bi-weekly payroll using BANNER. Serve as liaison to the Financial Aid Office with regard to FCSWS. Maintain contracts with partner sites in line with Federal guidelines.
- Support staff in implementation of the center’s annual campus-wide events and take the lead on planning and implementation of the annual Community Involvement Fair
- Service Trip Organization
- Oversee the implementation of yearly Alternative Break trips over Fall and Spring Breaks. Work with student leaders to recruit trip leaders, recruit participants, design trip leader training, and design post trip reflection. Assist with developing new and sustaining existing community partner sites and projects
- Coordinate the Service Saturday program (monthly local service projects) including securing partner sites, publicity and volunteer recruitment, student leader training and assessment
- Participate as needed in first year Bonner service trip during Spring Break
- Publicity and Communication
- Maintain the CCE website with updated and accurate information
- Point person in the CCE for updating WildcatSync (OrgSync platform), including monitoring civic engagement opportunities submitted through the platform and sharing within the office as well as responding to the community partners
- Create and share emails or newsletters to be used each semester for community partners and student leader assessment
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Master’s degree in higher education or related field is required
- A minimum of 2 years related professional experience working with students in the area of community engagement
- Experience with program development and assessment.
- Ability to build relationships with a wide range of audiences including nonprofit partners, students, staff, and faculty
- Understanding of student leadership development in a college setting
- Strong communication skills.
- Appreciation for the role that liberal arts institutions play with the community.
- Familiarity with webtools and social media
