2016 Hague Summer Program

The American University Washington College of Law’s (WCL) Summer Law Program in The Hague is a unique experience for students, offering an opportunity to learn among the practitioners working daily in the field of international criminal law.  The program takes advantage of its setting in The Hague to bring students directly into contact with those practitioners and provide the most candid and insightful instruction possible through two courses offered over the course of four weeks: International Criminal Law: In Search of Accountability and International Legal Approaches to Terrorism in the 21st Century.

In addition to classroom experience, the program further utilizes the “external campus” of The Hague to bring students to the most critical institutions of international law, including the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.  Students have the opportunity to tour these sites, view proceedings, and attend lectures by practitioners as a supplement to their classroom instruction.

Through these experiences, the program offers excellent networking opportunities for the students.  Furthermore, the program’s time frame from May 30 until June 25 affords students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in an internship during the remainder of the summer, whether in The Hague or back in the United States.

We are excited to invite your students to consider the Summer Law Program in The Hague, and we have attached as a PDF the flyer for this year, and more information, including video of a past info session, is available at http://www.wcl.american.edu/hague/. Students may also contact us directly at hagueprogram@wcl.american.edu.
