The World is an Astonishing Place

A collection of my favorite quotes from Hillman Curtis’ Artist Series:

Stefan Sagmeister

“Assuming is stifling”

“Trying to look good limits my life.”

“Boring solves nothing”

“I always look for clients that are smarter than me.”

Lawrence Weiner

“Let me ask you a question.”

Of course

“How the hell do you know how the universe is supposed to function?”

“You are in the stream of life whether you like it or not.”

“I prefer sans serif… everybody was using Helvetica and that’s one of the typefaces I absolutely detest…it’s totally authoritative. It, in fact, does not adapt itself to things and all information that comes out in helvetica is telling you exactly the same thing.”

(Lawrence Weiner prefers Franklin Gothic)

“You’ve got to be who you are, no matter how dangerous it is.”

(Lawrence Weiner speaks nothing like I expected him to. He is so eloquent.)

Daniel Libeskind

“We take for granted dreams, desperations, ideals.”

(Side story: I was supposed to visit the Jewish Museum in Berlin while I was abroad [featured in the video- the room with the faces that you walk on]. Unfortunately, I had pneumonia the weekend our program went and it’s the one opportunity I’m disappointed I missed. According to my classmates, the building made you feel fiercely and the way that Libeskind used light and space could give you chills.)

Mark Romanek

“When you’re making a movie, you’re creating this fake moment that you want people to believe in.”

“I plan my shots out purposefully very little.”

“There’s something to do with leaving the audience with a question: What that does is engaging the audience. As soon as it becomes interpretative, you’re engaged.”

Milton Glaser

“None of us have the ability to understand our path until it’s over.”

“Because you have access to people’s minds, there is a corresponding responsibility.”

“The world is a very astonishing place.”

“That’s one of the great benefits of being in the arts, where the possibility for learning never disappears.”

David Byrne & Brian Eno

“You’re changing your expectations and this is what keeps music interesting.”

I loved this spotlight because David Byrne is one of my music idols. I’m currently reading his book, “How Music Works” and respect his appreciation for the art. Also I love watching musicians listen to their own music.

James Victore

“Graphic design is big fucking club with spikes on it, and I want to wield it.”

Pentagram

Pentagram reminds me of the company I used to work at- Kimley-Horn. It is an engineering firm that is run by practice builders. Each practice builder is in charge of their own team and the growth of their reputation, but they have the resources of a large company.

David Carson

“I wouldn’t want someone working for me that wasn’t doing self-indulgent work.”

“I did every issue like it would be the last.”

“The starting point is to try and interpret something.”

Paula Scher

“It’s always been very intuitive for me. If I don’t get it by the second crack, I probably never will.”
