Pica Towers

This Weekend, I watched the animated trilogy Pica Towers. My initial impression of the series was that it would be a cutie Pixar style animation, but quickly I realized the the subject matter of the shorts was rather perverse. The first two characters that you encounter are what appear to be a couple in to some very sadomasochistic sex acts. This violent and taboo subject matter choice is a theme throughout all three films and when juxtaposed with the uber cute characters the shorts take on a very unique theme. They behave almost like a Hitchcock style animated pixar horror film.  The second film Hound of Flesh was my favorite of the trilogy. By making the main character blind the film makers add to the sense of terror that the audience feels. Also revisiting the murder scene from the first film deftly ties the two stories together. The third short seemed like the weakest of the three, I wanted a comprehensive tie up of all three films and Pizza Sangre failed to provide. I did however appreciate the tip of the hat to the Friday the 13 series by featuring the blood thirst Mother with a handicap goon son. All things considered I really enjoyed Pica Towers and would gladly rematch them all. I bet i would get even more out of them the second time around.

Cheers,

Neff
