Converge South

I have to start off by saying that this event was definitely different than what I expected. By Different, I mean in a good way. I thought this conference would be boring and not worthwhile. I didn’t have the opportunity to stay the whole time, but the time that I was there, I enjoyed myself.

I had the chance to attend three different seminars. The one I enjoyed the most was the first one ‘Blogging for a living’. I think I enjoyed this because the speaker was energetic, funny and very personable, all traits that I picked up on from the outset. I’m one of those people that if I’m going to listen and pay attention to what you have to say during a long period of time, you better catch my attention within the first three minutes of talking. This guy did just that. The speaker told us about his life and didn’t sugar code the reality of the industry.

The fact is whether it’s obvious or not, there really isn’t any money in the blogging industry. Are there people who make lots of money blogging? Yes there are, but that percentage is very small, similar to the lines of people that you and I know that went on to play a professional sport. The Speaker emphasized that if you were to blog for a living that you should love the job you’re doing. He also mentioned handy tips such as reading everyday and looking at other people’s blog post to gain style and other ideas that may make your blog that much better. The fact that there are a variety of topics to blog about was also discussed.

I took away from this particular seminar that there is money to be made in blogging but you have to work at it and catch the right break. You also have to be diligent and produce high quality work. While blogging isn’t my desired profession, it is something that I may want to try out as a side job and after that seminar, at least I have some tips moving forward.
