iPhone interface design

Edward Tufte discusses the design components of the iPhone interface that make it such a success. He mentions the importance of scrolling in hands, using a high-resolution screen, suppressing administrative debris, using spatial distribution of information and completely integrating text, images, and live video. Suppressing administrative debris is one of the most significant.  Delegating as much of the screen to the content as possible is a very good design technique.  The iPhone interface does a good job of suppressing administrative debris.  Tufte points out that “clutter and overload are not an attribute of information; they are failures of design.”  The importance of design in dealing with a lot of information is becoming stronger and stronger as data becomes more and more abundant.  We need good design in order to organize a lot of data.  Tufte points to the iPhone interface as an interface that successfully accomplishes the goal of good design.
