Watching Rick Morris talk about his method and showing his house really was interesting for me. He wasn’t the crazy artist but he was also not the crazy hipster ultra modern sterile artist. This gives me hope for people like me.
There is more to design then being crazy or being sterile. Morris talks about how he and his wife purposefully put pieces of art that makes him think. So in this case, art for him is not merely for art’s sake; art is a way to help inspire good design. The look and feel of the art helps Morris think of how those issues inform design and the method of designing.
The usual sterility that one sees and thinks of with designers I think is the largest detriment to design. Design is about being clean and cool and modern, but if your life is the same way, then there is less chance that you will get to experience a more creative streak.
