Hillman Curtis Artist Series

Hillman Curtis did a great job creating a visual style that reflected the artists portrayed in his mini documentaries. The five videos I watched were short and sweet- making them easy to digest and appreciate. My two favorites mini videos were about Mark Romanek and Paula Scher. I thought Curtis did the best job illustrating the narrative and meaning behind these two artists.

I thought Paula Scher’s video was inspiring because she felt very approachable and relatable. Compared to the other videos I watched about graphic design and typography, her art seemed to have more narrative and expression. I loved her work with the New York theatre- the graphic designs she produced for it was so playful.

My favorite video was with Mark Romanek. I really appreciate his work! I’ve always loved movie trailers because they are so emotionally packed- less than a minute to convey a feeling and motivate people to want to watch a movie. What Romanek really reminded me of what I have always been interested in with trailers. Romanek only has the length of a song to fit all of the emotions and images recorded from the song. I have such strong memories of Fiona Apple’s controversial video “Criminal” debuted- what a surprise to learn years later that Romanek directed that video. He is incredibly talented and has such a talent for making videos that move people- even when they are very controversial.
