Art and Life Lessons

After watching the Hillman Curtis Artist Series I feel like I have been filled with wisdom not only about art and design but also, about life. Each video made distinct production choices in order to give the viewer insight to the personality and work of the designer being portrayed. These short clips don’t give the viewer a history of the artist but, go beyond their accomplished work and instead, focus on into their outlook on the world. I like the approach that this series takes on portraying each one of these artists. I think after watching the videos one can begin to understand the ways the artists’  viewpoints have been translated in their work and better appreciate how each of them sees the world.

My Favorite Quotes from the Artists:

Laurence Weiner:

“You have to be who you are no matter how dangerous it is.”

“Can I ask you a question? How the hell do you know how the universe is suppose to function?” We each have no reason to determine how the universe works. We have a reason to determine how the universe presents itself.”

“You are in the stream of life whether you like it or not and if your going to be in the stream of life then you have to accept the responsibilities. I would like a few more of the pleasures but it doesn’t seem to be time”

David Carson:

“Let your personality come through in the work.”

“The starting point is to try to interpret something.”

James Victore:

“I sit until I make myself laugh.”

Milton Glaser:

“None of us really have the ability to understand our path until its over.”

“Art preforms this pacifying function in culture. Its practitioners create commonalities.”
