Postmodernism, Formalism and Expressionalim

I first like to discuss Postmodernism and what it has to offer. It offers purpose and design, presence, depth and a hierarchy. It has a tendency towards more contemporary culture characterized by splashes of objective truth and inherent suspicion that all realities are what society constructs and those realities are subject to change with society. On the other hand Formalism as belief that the values of art can stand alone and that judgments of art can be detached from other consideration such as the ethical or social (pg.107 ‘Why Is That Art’). It has been identified with the slogan “Art for the sake of art (pg.107)”. I am interpreting this to mean that no matter what the art is or what medium in use to share of display the art it is art. That if art is deemed pornographic, ugly or beautiful it doesn’t matter because it transcends all those description to become what it is; art or artful. On the other hand Postmodernism has a purpose to deliver the art in a way that is acceptable and purposeful, not only to invoke meaning with beauty and aesthetics, but also in the meaning of being artful and influential through a cause that is sometimes deemed as being rebellious. This has made postmodern art very useful in the fashion world.

I guess both of these forms mix together to culminate the form of art know as Expressionism or expressionist art. It has purpose and meaning and can also be rebellious with the portrayal of emotional angst and individual self-exploration. Expressionist sought to explore their emotional experiences and meaning like Formalist, but also adhered to some of the school of thought like those of the postmodernist. The felling that all art draws from one another or borrows from each school to make something that is completely new or avant-garde. I believe all these forms have commonality, at the same time having enough of a difference to be categorized into their own perspective fields. Art it’s not what’s for dinner but can be pick and chosen like a round at the buffet table. Take what you like and leave the rest for others. If you like it accept it, if not at least you’ve experienced it.
