Toward an Aesthetics of Transition

Throughout the article Thorburn and Jenkins explore the relationship between old and new media. They point out that while many people are worried about the end of traditional media it’s termination is not likely. Instead they highlight the symbiotic relationship that traditional media and new media hold together. Old media will not die, like most have predicted but, instead will adapt and transform to work with digital media forms. It may have to extend beyond its original structure to survive but this change also allows for traditional media to reach to different niches and take on new functions.

The very last line of the article says, “Language is migratory across communications and will endure.” I like this line because it reminds us that even with new technology at every turn nothing will ever replace language itself. We may adapt the way in which we express ourselves in a new media but, language will always be the common thread in communication no matter where technology takes us.
