The Inclusion Principle

This article and discussion about universal design was something of interest to me not only because I am a beginner in this web coding world but because universal design really relates to our every day lives, especially being a tour guide at Elon University.

I have been on a tour before where I was showing three families around campus and one of them had a parent who was in a wheel chair. The only dorm rooms on tour for display was Carolina, which happens not to be universally designed, meaning there were no ramps or any way for this handicapped individual to access the dorm where their daughter could potentially be living the following year. As a tour guide it was embarrassing to not have all building universally designed. This article reminded me of that particular situation and made me understand the importance of universal design in web design.

The inclusion principle is very important to web users today. There is no excuse for web users to be limited when it comes to accessibility. The inclusion principle should be stressed to all web designers. For all I know it will definitely save them from some “awkward” moments where people are restricted from their website and content. There are many solutions for the excuses and problems that arise with the use of the inclusion principle that people must explore and move forward with.
