Hospital Visit

Going to a Vietnamese hospital was one of the most eye opening experiences so far in this trip. To start, I have never had an IV before so it was kind of a freaky experience to be doing it in a foreign country. Second, it was done in a pretty open room so I felt like I did not have the same privacy as I would back in the United States. But the mostbizzare part was that from our hotel in Hoi an, there was only two hospitals where I could receive the treatment I needed. Adequate healthcare seems to be a luxury that only the rich, government workers, and tourists can receive. This has helped open my eyes and has answered many questions to some of the different behaviors and cultural differences I have noticed so far. For example, many restaurants have one or two towels in which people can wash their hands with. Also, I have noticed that a good amount of people spit on the ground. Lastly, people don’t seem to take care of their teeth as well. Based on my experience with this country’s healthcare, I have determined that people are not as well educated about common health risks that we know well about in the United States. Either that, or they do not have the proper means to be as healthy as they can be.

What makes all of this very interesting is the life of the average Vietnamese person is longer than the average life of an American. I cannot think of a reason why considering their comparatively unhealthy lifestyle to ours.
