Emma Warman, Elon senior, talks about her study abroad trip to Senegral and the sexual assault that shattered her experience. Her story of transformation includes healing and support following the assault, and a determination to make things better for others.
“What I hope that you can take from my story, is it’s not about me or study abroad. It’s not a story about Senegal, West Africa, or Islam. It’s a story about us, and about sexual violence. And sexual violence happens just as easily abroad as it does to 1 in 5 women on our campus. It’s up to you and me to continue this conversation, and as Ghandi said, ‘to be the change we wish to see in the world.'”
