SOURCE (Student Outreach Resource Center) is the community service and service-learning center for the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health. The Assistant Director supports the growth and effectiveness of community involvement initiatives. The Assistant Director works closely with students and student leaders, and assists them in developing community outreach skills, exploring and understanding social justice issues, accessing community service resources, and making connections to the Baltimore community, particularly as it relates to students’ future roles as health professionals. The Assistant Director is expected to model and encourage involvement in the community and effective program planning. All responsibilities require close collaboration with SOURCE’s Director and staff, students and student leaders, campus colleagues, and community-based organizations.
The Assistant Director functions as a counselor/educator; providing programs and services that embrace the values of social justice, citizenship, ethical decision-making, diversity and service to others. Specifically, the duties include: counseling, event planning, advising, and coordinating student volunteer initiatives.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
COUNSELING • Provide individual consultation and referrals to students interested in service to the community. • Field and respond to information requests from all levels of internal (faculty, staff, students) and external individuals and organizations regarding SOURCE policies, procedures, and services. • Create awareness on campus of different social issues in Baltimore. • Develop reflection and educational resources for students. • Facilitate reflection for student volunteers working with organizations.
EVENT AND PROGRAM PLANNING • Conduct volunteer fair, community tours, seminars, donation drives, Days of Service, and other events. • Organize SOURCE’s Baltimore Week and National Volunteer Week activities. • Must be present and accountable during key activities and events sponsored, co-sponsored or offered by SOURCE, including occasional evening and weekend events. • Manage the HIV Counseling, Testing, and Referrals Program (recruitment, admissions, liaise with community clinics, reflection sessions with student volunteers, etc.) • Create and disseminate marketing materials to publicize programs.
ADVISING • Serve as a consultant to community engaged student groups, encourage and sustain partnerships with student groups, and provide services and support to partnering student groups. • Assist students and student groups in planning service-related programs and events. • Advise Federal Work-Study Student Program Assistants (Media and Marketing; SOURCE Service Scholars) • Develop, coordinate and train student leaders in leading service opportunities in order to prepare student leaders to become ambassadors for SOURCE.
VOLUNTEER INITIATIVES • Support the development and implementation of new service initiatives. • Coordinate the SOURCE Service Scholars program, and advise individual scholars. • Broaden volunteer recruitment efforts. • Assess and track student involvement, SOURCE programs and events, needs of community-based organizations, and campus climate around community service. • Develop and implement an ongoing orientation and training program for student volunteers working with local organizations. • Compile and maintain information related to service-learning, community-based participatory research, and volunteerism. • Work closely with community-based organizations to forge and sustain viable partnerships and encourage student involvement within these organizations. • Produce quarterly newsletter and other publications.
In addition, the Assistant Director functions as an integral member of SOURCE’s team, assisting the Director in managing the general operations of the center, and responding to the needs of the center through contributing to special projects and other duties as assigned.
Degree of independent action performed on the job: Position requires high-level of coordination and collaborative skills. Moderate oversight from SOURCE Director.
Internal and external contacts required as part of the job: Requires extensive coordination with various offices within the JHU Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health (MPH Program, academic departments, Student Affairs), students, student groups, and with external contacts at local non-profit organizations.
Special Skills/Knowledge: • Commitment to an ethic of community service, and the growth, education, and independence of students. • Self-direction, energy, creativity, strong interpersonal skills, initiative, excellent organizational and communication skills, openness to change • Ability to work successfully with students, community leaders, administrators and faculty. • Ability to balance multiple demands. • Ability to work independently, as well as willingness and availability to work weekend and evening hours for special projects. • Must complete a great number of projects without supervision, but must realize and seek appropriate input, advice and assistance when needed. • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite required. • Maturity and the good judgment and sensitivity to deal tactfully, both in person and on the telephone, with students, faculty, staff and others who may have concern with the office are essential. • Ability to speak knowledgeably of the significance of partnership and the importance of volunteer/service-learner preparation and training.
Education: Masters degree preferred, with 2 years experience working with college students/student groups and/or planning and promoting service activities a plus. Past volunteer experience preferred. Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite required.
