Statewide Challenge Drawing to Close!

Is your campus participating in NC Campus Compact’s Tenth Year Anniversary Statewide Challenge?  All member campuses have identified food insecurity initiatives they are tracking between the Student Conference (November 12) and our anniversary date (March 22):

  • Pounds of food items collected
  • Number of food items donated
  • Number of meals created or served
  • Number of volunteer hours targeting food insecurity initiatives
  • Dollars raised to help alleviate food insecurity

The final results will be shared with all member presidents and chancellors, giving them opportunity so share broadly about your campus’ participation in the Compact, and the impact we have when working together.

Western Carolina University has a campus-wide strategy they are using to address local challenges, and to participate in the Statewide Challenge.  They are in the middle of a year-long university-wide initiative focusing on poverty, with quite a few projects dealing with local food insecurity. Highlights include:

  • A craft group on campus collected 40 food items during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
  • The campus disc golf club collected over 400 items the same week
  • At the November Employee Appreciation Day, 322 food items —  a  total of 273 pounds – were collected!
  • Students at WCU’s Wesley Foundation donated 136 food boxes in December — a total of 1,088 items!
  • The Psychology Club donated more than $400 worth of food to a local food pantry that was in danger of running out of food.
  • WCU continues to challenge the campus, with several food drives planned for the spring.

Great photos of your activities, Western!

Send your campus’ story to Julie Lawson at julievlawson@gmail.com.

And remember to submit your campus’ guess by March 16 at noon!  Each NC Campus Compact campus can submit one guess to the following two questions by March 16.  The closest guess to each question wins $100 for their campus’ programming – that’s two $100 mini-grants!

  • How many total pounds of food do you think will be collected by all 42 campuses through the Statewide Challenge?
  • How many total meals will be created or served by all 42 campuses during the November 12 through March 22 Statewide Challenge?

Submit your campus’ guess today, but no later than March 16 at noon! E-mail Julie Lawson at julievlawson@gmail.com.  Please put “Campus Guess” in the subject line.
