Today was a day that a lot of us were looking forward to on this trip, seeing Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery. Omaha Beach was where on June 6th, 1944, D-Day occurred. American troops stormed the beaches of Normandy on that day in an attempt to take down the German forces. Quick fun fact before we get into our incredible day, Hitler was actually asleep when American forces stormed Omaha Beach and he didn’t know about it until later in the day.
Our day began with a visit to a German cemetery where German soldiers and people of other nationalities were buried. This is a unique cemetery for that reason, in which case people were buried their as individuals, not as a whole group of the same unit or of the same nationality. It was evident with the entrance to the cemetery. The entrance was a stone wall with a little arch way that we all had to pass through in a single file line. This proved the point of people being buried based on themselves and as individuals, as we all walked through individually.
After our time at the cemetery we head to the Pointe Du Hoc. Point Du Hoc was used as a German vantage point overlooking the English Channel. There were numerous bunkers that located there that were occupied by the Germans and gave them advantages over American troops. As we were walking to the cliffs we walked past a field, which at one point was covered in 4,500 land mines. Getting closer to the cliffs, there were these huge craters in the ground that were created from air raids from the allied troops which were incredible to see.
After a delicious Crique Monseiur for lunch, it was time to head to Omaha Beach. This was the part of the trip I was looking forward to, and what a better day to go to the beach when it’s 40° in the middle of January. We started walking up to the beach and it was all so surreal. All of the things we had read about in textbooks, all the pictures we’ve seen and all the stories I’ve heard from relatives and friends, is all right in front of me. It was unbelieveable to try and imagine what the troops went through that day and being able to walk in their footsteps is something I can’t put into words.
Concluding our day was a trip to the American Cemetery that overlooked Omaha Beach. Seeing the names of thousands of soldiers buried there was unbelieveable. On the stones were also which state the soldier was enlisted in and their unit. Men from all over the country serving in the war, for our freedom and our future all buried right in front of where we were standing. At 4:25 the 2 American flags at the front of the cemetery began to be taken down from their masts. The first at 4:25 and the second at 4:30. While lowering the 2nd one at 4:30 the ceremony pays tribute to the American soldiers where they played Taps as the flag was being taken down. We were all overcome with emotions seeing that American flag being lowered. All of the men that fought for us during the war and on D-Day all being honored right before us. We were all so thankful that we were able to experience this moment together and all had an enormous sense of pride for our country in that moment.
After leaving the cemetery, we had now all realized what an incredible last day of the trip it was. We have all learned so much on in these last 3 weeks, 3 weeks that we will all never forget. We are all so thankful for this opportunity that we have been given to participate in this course and travel throughout Europe learning about World War II. From that we bid adieu to Europe, where we’ve visited 5 countries, 7 cities, and countless examples of how World War II affected Europe and the civilians of each.
Beautiful sunset in Normandy to end an incredible 3 weeks of our study abroad experience.
