Sanitation

One thing that has become prevalent to me during our time in Vietnam is the lack of healthcare. Multiple times we witnessed a lack of hygienic regulations throughout the country.

Our group participated in a cooking class where we made our own spring rolls, which were surprisingly tasty. The only thing that irked me is the extreme dirtiness we witnessed on one of the knives. Personally, it didn’t really bother me (I’m not the cleanest person). However, throughout the next day I was thinking how a situation like this would have been handled in the US. It would definitely not have gone unsaid or even delivered to us in the first place. To me, this showered an obvious and clear cut (literally) difference between our two countries.

At our last hotel, Au Lac Hotel, in Ho Chi Minh City, my roommate and I witnessed a server drop a serving utensil, pick it up, and place it back in the food. We were so surprised to see someone blatantly disregard any health codes that would’ve been violated in the United States.

In order for this country to develop into a more productive first world country, there needs to be a change in the government and the sanitation laws that’s are clearly not in place. I believe that the only way this will ever happen is if the Vietnamese people become more educated on this matter and begin to care about the safety of the food and water they consume daily.
