Assistant Director, Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, East Carolina University

The Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement encourages, supports, and shapes a culture of civic responsibility through the use of service-learning, leadership education, and experiential learning, empowering leaders to make positive impacts on campus and in their communities. The Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement is supported by the Student Involvement and Leadership (SIL) unit within East Carolina University’s Division of Student Affairs. SIL enhances the educational experience for all students by helping to build a sense of campus community through a wide variety of programs and services for individuals and student groups. Through a broad range of co-curricular, cultural, educational, recreational, and social programs, SIL supports the university’s commitments of student success, public service, and regional transformation. The unit is composed of six departments: Campus Recreation and Wellness, Student Activities and Organizations, Greek Life, Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, Intercultural Affairs, and Student Centers. The Assistant Director works as a member of a team supporting student development through a series of leadership and civic engagement programs designed to assist students in fostering the skills, knowledge, competencies, and values necessary to become effective leaders and citizens. The programs and initiatives offer students basic skills training as well as opportunities for personal growth, networking, and capacity building that provide a foundation for ethical action and commitment throughout their lives. Responsibilities may include: oversight of leadership academies, youth programming and outreach, community partnerships, service-learning course support, leadership-focused scholarship programs, and ECU Leads. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director and supervises an AmeriCorps VISTA professional, as well as student staff.

This person also works with service-learning students to identify appropriate service-learning sites and community partners, and supports faculty to ensure communication of logistics and relevant information on service-learning sites through in-class presentations and/or individual consultations. The Assistant Director supports integrative learning experiences through effective planning, implementation and assessment of current initiatives, and develops additional experiences that foster responsible citizenship.

This is a professional position with responsibilities having a direct impact on the quality of students’ educational experiences and interaction with their peers, as well as the campus community at large. Additionally, this position requires a strong knowledge of university budgetary practices, service-learning, leadership education, community engagement, problem-solving skills, independent decision-making and critical thinking skills are necessary.
