Assistant or Associate Extension Professor of Community and Leadership Development, University of Kentucky

The Department of Community and Leadership Development in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment at the University of Kentucky seeks applicants for a 12-month, tenure track, Assistant or Associate Extension Professor position. The anticipated start date is January 2019. Responsibilities will include both conducting Cooperative Extension programming as well as teaching in the areas of community development and organizational leadership.

The initial Distribution of Effort (DOE) is anticipated to be 55% Extension, 40% instruction, and 5% service (DOE and assignments are subject to annual negotiation between the faculty member and administration). The successful candidate will be expected to establish high impact, research-based Extension programs that respond to issues facing communities and groups across Kentucky, and contribute to the Department’s instructional programs. Success in attracting extramural funding, peer-reviewed publications, and graduate student mentoring are also expected.

A successful candidate’s Extension programming efforts could include:
• Civic and social entrepreneurship that incorporates community innovation, creativity, and/or other engagement strategies
• Community processes applicable to rural or urban communities and groups such as strategic planning, community visioning, assessment, and group facilitation
• Community based organization development such as board development, managing change, and organizational sustainability
• Community program planning, implementation, and evaluation
• Community organizing, civic engagement, local intergovernmental cooperation, and public deliberation on issues such as land use planning or other locally identified issues
• Providing professional capacity building for county Extension agents and other audiences

Clientele for these Extension programs include Cooperative Extension personnel and groups at the county and state levels, community organizations, non-profits, government agencies, and associations.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will participate in interdisciplinary efforts within and/or outside the Department. Opportunities include the Community and Economic Development Initiative for Kentucky (CEDIK) in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment or other groups at the University of Kentucky.

The candidate will be expected to teach 3-4 courses per year at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.

Qualities of a successful candidate’s teaching could include:
• Utilizing innovative individual and group learning processes including student centered and experiential learning approaches
• Creatively addressing contemporary issues with a sensitivity towards social justice
• The ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures including those from historically underrepresented groups and nontraditional students
• Ability to deliver classroom and online courses
• Creating and sustaining an engaged environment for student learning
• Integrating classroom instruction with Extension opportunities
