Stanford University’s Haas Center for Public Service and Diversity and First Generation (DGen) Office seeks a dynamic Program Director for the Emerson Peace and Justice Fellowship, a cohort program for students interested in addressing peace and justice issues in the broader community. The Haas Center serves as the hub of Cardinal Service, a campus-wide initiative to make service a distinctive feature of a Stanford education. The Haas Center inspires and prepares students to create a more just and sustainable world through service, scholarship, and community partnerships.

JOB OVERVIEW:

The Program Director will oversee development and implementation of Stanford University’s new Emerson Peace and Justice Fellowship (EPJF) initiative, aimed at preparing a new generation of ethical and effective civic leaders to tackle one of our most complex and intransigent problems: inequality. The goal of the EPJF initiative is to bring together resources from multiple units across campus to facilitate a dialogue-to-action pathway that helps undergraduate students build skills and habits that will lead to a lifelong commitment to peace and justice work.  Through the fellowship, students will develop skills of democratic engagement and habits for effective action and advocacy while undertaking opportunities to hone and practice those skills through real world service experiences.

The Program Director will manage the development of a primarily residential-based, cohort program model that will engage 50 undergraduates in the pilot year building to a goal of 150 students by the end of the second year of implementation. Initial program design will include efforts to weave together many of the University’s most impactful programs and assets: world class faculty and staff; residential learning; intergroup dialogue, inclusion training, contemplation and wellness resources; public service frameworks and opportunities; design thinking; local, regional, and global partnerships. Implementation will include marketing and advising, coordinating selection of cohorts and facilitators, reflective workshop programming, faculty and student communication, and continuous program improvement.

Excellent candidates will be able to work well both independently and as part of a team; have strong communication skills; and have experience in interpreting university and department policies; identifying, clarifying, and resolving complex issues that may span programs and departments; and using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring independent judgment.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Administer and manage all aspects of the Emerson Peace and Justice Fellowship Initiative, including program development, implementation, evaluation (student and community or campus partners) and data tracking, reporting, and recommendations for continuous improvement and future program innovations.
  • Oversee key processes including program and partner development, selection, preparatory workshops/courses, cohort development and reflection.
  • Facilitate student workshops and other collaborative program activities.
  • Collaborate with others to help resolve program issues and concerns, interpret policies, and mediate complex and sensitive issues.
  • Resolve multi-dimensional matters in response to students in crisis, at risk, or who have other program issues, counsel students and parents on sensitive and confidential issues.
  • Provide guidance and counsel, oversee and develop a wide range of programs and services, analyze effectiveness and make recommendations for future programs.
  • Reconcile complex issues; analyze diverse transactions from multiple sources.
  • Summarize data from multiple sources, prepare management reports and presentations.
  • Identify and evaluate data needs, manage the implementation and development of technology.
  • Develop and Implement plans for outreach efforts, develop and maintain external community and university liaison represent department and university at meetings and events.
  • Provide advice to students on a range of issues in order to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions.
  • Apprise students of research, fellowship and scholarship opportunities, make recommendations and may award grants.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to other departments; represent unit/department.
  • Lead, create and contribute to development of business practices and organizational change to improve processes and workflow.
  • May oversee, analyze and assist in financial processes and development of budgets.
    Serve as a key member of university wide teams and projects.
  • May train and supervise other staff, volunteers and temporary workers.

Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
  • Advanced analysis and problem solving skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
