Coordinator for Volunteerism and Service Learning, Mount Mercy University

Mount Mercy University is a Catholic, coeducational University founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1928 enrolling approximately 1900 students. The University offers a variety of liberal arts, professional, accelerated and graduate degree programs on a picturesque campus overlooking the city.

Position Summary:

This is a full-time, 12-month position reporting to the Vice President for Mission and Ministry.

Responsibilities:

Is a member of the Mission & Ministry Team with special duties to develop and facilitate local and distance co-curricular service experiences for members of the Mount Mercy University community, which involves students in their planning and implementation.  Accompany and/or arrange with Mount Mercy University faculty/staff to go with students on service learning trips which provide a deeper understanding to the Mercy Critical Concerns, time for cultural immersion and a process for the students to reflect on their service activities.  Serve as a resource for and coordinates with campus constituencies seeking service opportunities.  Meet with campus groups and act as a liaison between Mount Mercy University and local non-profit service agencies.  Work with faculty to develop curricular service learning opportunities across the disciplines, both within existing courses and in new courses.  Consult with faculty and students regarding service placements and other issues for service learning courses.  Collect and summarize information and data on the curricular and co-curricular community service of the Mount Mercy campus community. Coordinate and lead volunteer and service learning programs with other civic organizations for the Mount Mercy Community.  Cooperate with the Campus Minister & GA for Social Justice to develop, with student leaders and Peer Ministers, ways to respond to local, national and global needs.  Create and maintain a pastoral presence through participation in Sunday liturgy and fellowship, attendance at other University events, availability to students and staff, and a lifestyle of witness to the Gospel and the Mercy charism and identity of the University.  Works with Marketing & Communications to maintain Service Opportunities webpage.  Assists with other programs of the Division of Mission and Ministry as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in pastoral theology, student services, social work or related fields.  Master’s degree is preferred.

  • Commitment to diversity and ability to work with diverse populations.
  • A demonstrated appreciation for and ability to articulate the unique values of diversity to the University, to the local community, and to society at large.
  • Ability to work effectively with traditional and adult students, faculty and staff.
  • Experience with community organizing, social services and/or volunteerism.
  • Leadership skills, and ability to develop consensus within organizations and between individuals.
  • Excellent written, speaking and interpersonal skills.
  • Competency in social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.).
  • Strong organizational/program management skills with experience maintaining both paper and electronic files. (competent in MSWord, MSExcel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Professionalism, flexibility and dependability.
  • Familiarity with current literature and relevant issues in service learning.
  • Personal commitment to service and available for participating in service trips.
