Director of Communications, Madison House, University of Virginia

Madison House is the student volunteer center at the University of Virginia. The Director of Communications works closely with the Executive Director, Director of Development, and Director of Community Engagement at Madison House to execute marketing and communications solutions to engage our audiences: the University of Virginia, the broader Charlottesville community, and our 30,000+ Madison House alumni.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage all website maintenance.
  • Create shareable content for Madison House website and social media accounts; communicate with staff and student volunteers to create content on a routine basis.
  • Coordinate the development of all print publications including brochures, newsletters, posters, and more by collaborating with outside graphic designers and/or by producing the work in-house.
  • Document Madison House programs with photography, video, and stories by making program site visits, coordinating with professional photographers/videographers, and collaborating with student volunteers.
  • Manage all email marketing on behalf of Madison House; create content for monthly e-newsletter as well as other messages for alumni, donors, and student volunteers; maintain email contacts list and sub-lists in collaboration with UVA’s Alumni Hall, University Advancement, and Madison House’s Director of Development.
  • Provide graphic design assistance for all program activities.
  • Coordinate, write, and distribute press releases and public service announcements.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with contacts at local and University media outlets; work closely with media representatives so that Madison House is accurately and positively represented in press.
  • Coordinate Madison House master graphics, letterhead, and business materials by collaborating with outside graphic designers and/or by producing the work in-house.
  • Manage social media on behalf of Madison House, including creating and posting shareable content, managing a budget for sponsored content to maximize engagement, and overseeing follower acquisition (paid or earned).
  • Develop and maintain consistency of Madison House visual image branding; evaluate Madison House branding on an on-going basis by implementing standards for print materials, t-shirts, social media images, media interviews, and so on.
  • Design and order Madison House promotional items with outside vendors.
  • Design and coordinate promotional displays (in-house or by working with outside vendors) for recruitment events.
  • Provide advisement and support to student driven marketing and volunteer recruitment efforts as needed. For example, assist with the production of t-shirts, posters, fliers, and social media ads.
  • Integrate operations of communications plan with larger staff team on a daily basis; provide staff support to Madison House-sponsored fundraisers and special events including Days on the Lawn Resource Fairs, Summer Orientations Resource Fairs, Student Activities Fair, Programs Fair, Homecomings, The BIG Event at UVA and Legacy of Service.
  • Assist the Director of Development by writing/editing content for solicitation emails as well as designing layout for printed solicitation letters.
  • Assist the Director of Development by producing case statement content and design as needed, interacting with respective partners for information that will accomplish support.
  • Assist the Director of Development in creating a strategy for online fundraising, specifically with events such as #GivingTuesday and #GivingToHoosDay, and implementing that strategy successfully.

Skills Required: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 2+ years of experience preferred in communications, public relations, marketing, or advertising.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Professional attitude and appearance.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with college students or in a university setting.
  • Intermediate to advanced Adobe Creative Cloud skills (particularly Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator) and Squarespace website maintenance experience.
