NCPIRG Campus Field Organizer: 2015-2016 Job Description
NCPIRG believes that for our democracy to work, young people need to be engaged. And the first step to engaging young people is getting them to speak out on issues that they care about and to exercise their voice at the polls. North Carolina is home to over 568,000 college students and 860,000 community college students and we have a huge opportunity to show they can be a strong political force in the state. Their sheer size means that the full participation of young people in the political process is necessary to ensure a truly representative democracy.
We saw in 2008 and 2012 that young people have the potential to continue playing a larger role in our political process, yet they still remain an underrepresented population in election turnout. We are working to build power so that our communities can be heard. To shift the landscape, we need more students engaged in civic participation and more youth voting.
With the changes in our state’s voting laws, including the repeal of same-day registration and the cutting of early voting days, both features heavily used by young voters, it’s vital for us to educate and engage young people in the voting process so we can make sure our voices get heard and alleviate any confusion when it comes to voting.
As a NCPIRG Campus Field Organizer, your job is to recruit these students to get involved — and to train them to be effective leaders who can run campaigns that make an impact in the community, in the state capitol, in Congress, at the White House, or wherever it will make a difference.
We’re hiring a Campus Field Organizer based in Raleigh to start immediately.
NCPIRG Campus Field Organizers will:
- Recruit and train student interns and volunteers to be leaders on their campus with a particular focus on Community Colleges in the Triangle and across the state.
- Run campaigns to get North Carolina “to go big on Solar”, get big money out of politics and make campuses more voting friendly for students.
- Around the elections you’ll run a non-partisan voter registration and turnout campaign in a campus community. Campus Organizers recruit and train a cadre of volunteers to register 18-29 year olds, collect pledges to vote, and contact all of these young people to turn out to vote on Election Day.
- Educate students and train new leaders. Campus Organizers teach citizenship and organizing skills. Campus Organizers also oversee an internship program, through which students can earn academic course credit for their work to boost youth civic engagement.
- Build a coalition. Campus Organizers work with student volunteers and interns to build a diverse, invested coalition of organizations and people, such as the student government and college president, to boost youth voter turnout.
- During the summer, you’ll run a citizen outreach canvass — and have the power of a paid staff of college students and others ready to help you build support for an issue, recruit new members and raise funds around the campaign.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate has strong in-person communication skills and experience with grassroots organizing tactics such as petitioning, phone-calling, or canvassing. Leadership experience with campus groups or student government is a plus.
Training: As a NCPIRG Campus Organizer, you will participate in regional and national trainings with other local State PIRG organizations run by experienced PIRG staff, consisting of both classroom-style learning and hands-on experience. This training will supplement the valuable skills and hands-on experience you gain on your campus.
