CSNAP Student Conference will train student leaders in “sustained dialogue”

sideybylogos“Listening deeply enough to be changed by what you learn.”

That’s how the  Sustained Dialogue Institute defines dialogue. Such deep listening — and related skills — comprise a powerful set of practices for student leaders who seek to engage differences as strengths. First developed by American diplomats for use in Middle East peace negotiations in the 1970s, the sustained dialogue process can help student leaders navigate conflict and move from talk to action.

North Carolina Campus Compact is excited to offer a day-long training on sustained dialogue to student leaders attending the 2015 CSNAP Student Conference on November 6-7. This year’s event is hosted by UNC Pembroke.

Located in southeast North Carolina, UNCP is one of the most diverse campuses in the nation with a rich American Indian history. Its 6,200 students experience a combination of opportunities, cultures and ideas that can’t be found anywhere else, so it is a fitting venue for discussions of diversity and community.

In addition to the sustained dialogue training, CSNAP participants may also attend a special Friday evening session – “Living Your Legacy” – which will highlight the unique community that is home to UNC Pembroke, while offering students a chance to reflect on their personal relationship to community change. The Friday evening session will include an introduction to local American Indian culture, crafts, and food; reflection and discussion; and a campus-wide screening of the feature documentary E-Team.

Unlike previous years, space at this year’s CSNAP event is limited to the first 100 registrants. Member campuses can register up to 3 student leaders and 1 faculty/staff until all slots are filled. Each campus should plan to send its Community Impact Student Award winner as part of the delegation.

After October 5, if space is available, registration will open to member and non-member campuses on a first come, first served basis.

IMG_5746webThe registration fee of  $90/pp ($100/pp for non-member campuses) covers the Friday evening session (incl. dinner), and the day-long Saturday training (incl. breakfast + lunch). CSNAP participants (or campuses) must provide their own travel and lodging, and may receive a special rate at Holiday Inn Express Pembroke on Friday night.

Registration is now open!
