VISTA Program Coordinator (Part-time), NC Campus Compact

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Program Coordinator is responsible for the Compact’s AmeriCorps*VISTA program. This is a 24 hour a week position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Program Coordinator provides leadership for and facilitates all aspects of the NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA program.

Grant Management

  • Assists in writing annual CNCS grant application.
  • Tracks grant deadlines, budgets, and reporting requirements.
  • Develops and manages performance measurement tracking system and reporting processes.
  • Participates in trainings/professional development opportunities offered by CNCS.

Host Site Oversight

  • Reviews host site applications and manages site selection process.
  • Develops professional development opportunities for supervisors.
  • Maintains regular contact with supervisors and troubleshoots issues.
  • Ensures campuses are working towards sustainability in their programs and assists them in considering next steps.

Member Recruitment and Development

  • Manages the recruitment, selection and placement processes to fill all VISTA positions
  • Supports, encourages and assesses the work of VISTA members and campus supervisors through site visits, regular phone & email contact.
  • Coordinates a year-long professional development for VISTA members and member campuses.
  • Oversees the accomplishing of the NC Campus Compact work plan objectives for all VISTAs.

Alumni Development

  • Builds and manages a NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA alumni database
  • Creates bi-annual alumni newsletter
  • Explores donor development opportunities

General  Program Oversight

  • Maintains the VISTA web site and blog.
  • Publicizes program success through local, state and national media venues.
  • Serves as a liaison with other state and federal offices connected to the VISTA program.

Other

  • Fully manages the Summer Associate program when that resource is made available.

Works with the NC Campus Compact team to vision the Compact’s growth, development and priorities, and supports the management of day-to-day operations (i.e., answering phone, etc.).

Other duties as imagined by the Program Coordinator or as assigned by the Executive Director.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for VISTAs, including Summer Associates, assigned throughout the state.  Ensure they complete all paperwork, stay on assignment. Provide training and feedback. Ability to interview and recommend placements for future VISTAs. Supervises NC Campus Compact VISTA Leaders.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s required, Master’s preferred
  • Experience in communications (e.g., press releases, social media) and grant writing
  • Experience in program development and implementation; strong organizational skills
  • Self-motivated with excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking – detail-oriented
    • Understands, appreciates and promotes the value of a year of service to address community challenges, build personal skills, and develop as citizens
    • Desire and ability to empower others, challenging them to grow and succeed
    • Interest in working within the higher education world, particularly with staff on college campuses across North Carolina
    • Willingness to travel throughout the state
    • Curious, lifelong learner
    • Leadership skills and ability to manage multiple projects and objectives
    • Skillful with technology and social media, particularly hosting webinars, blogs and other virtual means to connect individuals across the state.
  • MUST PASS NATIONAL SERVICE CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Requires excellent written and oral communication skills in English.  Ability to speak effectively and present information and respond to questions from diverse groups.  Will communicate via telephone, e-mail, fax, and in person with outside groups.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Responsible for maintaining multiple budgets; must accurately add, subtract, track expenses, propose future spending. Use of calculator and Excel. 

REASONING ABILITY

Need to be quick thinker and problem solver, interacting with different kinds of staff on diverse campuses.  Ability to listen well, provide feedback, and to summarize.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Ability to plan, organize, and implement a variety of complex tasks at the same time.  Ability to work collaboratively with others, communicate with multiple constituencies, and accomplish multiple goals and objectives. Ability to maintain databases and web site.  Able to envision better technology uses that may streamline systems.  Able to consider and implement new technologies (webinars, blog) that connect campuses throughout North Carolina.  Position requires previous work with Microsoft Word and Powerpoint, with Excel helpful. Use of PC in office.

OTHER PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Knowledge or experience with AmeriCorps and/or Campus Compact
  • Strong interest and experience in campus-community engagement and/or partnerships
  • Commitment to the mission of Campus Compact and its impact on communities
  • Knowledge and interest in working with higher education professionals
  • Charismatic and passionate

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Light lifting (up to 30 lbs) may be required.  Occasional long days around retreats and conferences.  Ability to travel cross-state by car.  Some days working primarily on computer in office.

Small, hard working, passionate staff committed to enhancing life in North Carolina by building a collaboration of campuses.  Cozy work space in small house.  Occasional meetings, campus visits and hosting of professional development at sites throughout North Carolina.
