Associate Director for Community Service, University of North Carolina at Pembroke

The position is a full-time 12-month EPA position within the Division of Student Affairs and reports to the Director of the Office for Community & Civic Engagement. The primary purpose of this position is to develop and manage academic service-learning programs, build community partnerships with nonprofits and government agencies, and engage faculty and students through service, service-learning and civic engagement.

The position will provide direction and leadership to academic Service-Learning programs and assist the Director of the Office for Community & Civic Engagement to design, implement and assess service programs, educational activities and events that embody the value of volunteerism, service and responsible citizenship. The position will be responsible to develop and maintain relationships with community agencies in a seven county region, to assist faculty in the development and incorporation of service-learning curriculum and engage students through service opportunities. This position will plan and develop curriculum for programs, workshops and seminars that provide education on community involvement, service activities and civic engagement.

The Associate Director for Community Service and Service-Learning will provide leadership and operational oversight in the development and implementation of academic service-learning and community-based service opportunities, volunteerism, advocacy, and research. Responsibilities include providing overall administrative direction and budget management for academic service-learning and integrating community service opportunities with the academic mission of UNCP; serving as senior adviser for Faculty Fellows cohort in determining service-learning curriculum; facilitating faculty development workshops, programs and seminars; seeking external funding to support creative endeavors; developing student leadership in service-learning initiatives; advising and conducting educational development on community service, civic responsibility and civic engagement for faculty, staff and students; coordinating risk management and evaluation activities related to service-learning; furthering institutionalization of processes and infrastructure for civic engagement and community-based learning at UNCP; and developing and maintaining relationships with community agencies in a seven county region.

The person in this position must be able to work closely with university faculty and executive staff of community organization to develop collaborative opportunities that advance curriculum implementation of theory to practice. This person must plan, develop, implement and assess effectiveness of programs, workshops and seminars that provide educational awareness through experiential learning and civic engagement. This person will conduct and present research on academic service-learning social justice, and civic engagement.

The person in this position will collect, maintain and manage data, conduct assessments and report learning outcomes on workshops, seminars, and service program effectiveness. This person will conduct research in the areas of service-learning, civic engagement, and community development that will provide best practices to cooperatively engage students, faculty and community in collaborative learning projects. This person will help to coordinate a community organization network that provides access to over 125 community partners.

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:
This position requires a master’s degree in student services, higher education, humanities or a related field. Two (2) years of experience in a college setting; ability to develop and maintain relationships with community agencies, students, and faculty; and excellent communication and project management experience. Candidates must have the ability to work well with a diverse university student population and minority community organizations.

Management Preferences:
Applicants must be innovative and creative in developing programs and projects that promote community service, civic engagement and volunteer opportunities for students; have the ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously; excellent writing and public speaking, marketing skills; have the ability to work independently and part of a team. Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office applications.
