Director, Swearer Center and Associate Dean, College for Engaged Scholarship, Brown University

Brown University seeks an experienced administrator to provide leadership, strategic direction, and management of the Howard R. Swearer Center for Public Service, one of the oldest public service centers housed in a university. The Swearer Center leads Brown University initiatives that integrate teaching, learning, and practice in order to advance scholarship and to produce a public benefit.

The Director/Associate Dean works closely with a wide range of stakeholders on and off-campus to create rigorous student learning opportunities and strong and reciprocal community relationships. The Director/Associate Dean oversees Center staff, programming that engages ~1000 students each year, and a budget of ~$1.5 million. The Director/Associate Dean also contributes to the general work of the College by advising assigned cohorts of students and serving on the Committee on Academic Standing. A faculty appointment is possible.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must have an advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred); 8-10 years of relevant strategic development, leadership, and management experience; and demonstrated success in fundraising for major initiatives.
  • The successful candidate will have a strong working knowledge of trends in higher education related to civic engagement, public service, and experiential education; and a demonstrated ability to foster an inclusive and collaborative culture of continuous learning and community building.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, high integrity, and a personal commitment to social justice are essential.
