Director, Volunteer and Service-Learning Center, East Carolina University

The primary purpose of the Director for the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center is to provide administrative oversight,
leadership, and development for the coordination of the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center. This position serves as the liaison among faculty, students and community agencies to promote and facilitate service learning, public service, and  engagement. The director will assist faculty with incorporating service learning into new and existing courses.

This position serves as a member of the Department of Student Involvement and Leadership to research, develop, implement, and assess initiatives to support and enhance the practices of service-learning and community engagement at East Carolina University. He/she will develop measurable student learning objectives for all programs and services provided by the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center.

He/she will implement and practice student development theory as it relates to job responsibilities that promote the understanding of regional, state, national, and global issues. The Director supports integrative learning experiences through effective planning, implantation and assessment of current initiatives and develops additional experiences that foster community engagement and responsible citizenship.

This is a professional position with responsibilities having a direct impact on the quality of students’ educational experiences and interaction with their peers, as well as the campus community at large. Additionally, this position requires a strong knowledge of university budgetary practices, risk management, problem solving skills, and contract negotiation; independent decision making and critical thinking skills are necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Masters Required, Doctorate Preferred, in College Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education or related field of study. All degrees should be from appropriately accredited institutions.
2. Minimum of five years of successful experience, at the collegiate level or in the non-profit sector; in the area of coordinating volunteer and service-learning programs.
3. Demonstrated experience and skills in the following areas: contract negotiation and review; budget development and management; program planning and implementation; and student learning assessment.
4. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication and public relations skills, including computer competencies.
5. Ability to foster and develop working relationships and a sense of community with a broad range of students and staff in a culturally diverse environment.
6. Demonstrated ability in developing, facilitating and leading workshops, meetings and training experiences.
