Sacrificing is always something that people are hesitant about. But true heroes know that, almost always, in order to succeed for the greater good, a sacrifice has to be made. That’s what I think makes Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird such a hero. Finch sacrificed his reputation, safety, and even both for his family, for the greater good. He was extremely well respected by the town of Maycomb, but his good conscience leads to his social downfall. He went against the town’s written and unwritten rules to fight for Tom Robinson, but the sad thing is that he went against the town to defend an innocent man. His effort to defend Robinson in the novel makes Atticus a hero to me.

While it may be a little bit extreme, Atticus shares the same morals and values that Martin Luther King Jr. did while he was fighting for civil rights. They both fought for what was right: Atticus fought for an innocent man (because he wanted everyone to be treated equal), and King fought for equality and innocent African Americans across the country. Atticus instilled a sense of justice and morality into his kids just like MLK preached about what’s right to the American people. Both of these guys made HUGE sacrifices and risks (their lives, their families, their reputations) while fighting for what’s right. Yes, I understand that Atticus Finch did not end segregation, but he fought for it in his town of Maycomb and did everything he could to support the truth and what was right.

I agree with how Atticus and MLK share similar characteristics. I like the point about going against “unwritten rules.” Sometimes it is the unwritten rules that are not as likely to be broken even more then written rules.

I think this is a great connection. At the core of both examples the goal is the same. Both strive to show the community at large the importance of fair and equal treatment towards all. Wonderful job!
